In this session, Dr. Nick Seiter covers the impact of winter rye cover crops on insect pest management. Ongoing research in Illinois shows that, while certain insect pests are more numerous following a rye cover crop, the incidence of economic damage due to insect pests following a cover crop is uncommon (as it is in conventional systems). The biology of armyworms and slugs, two pests commonly associated with cover crop systems, are discussed, along with management recommendations. The session  concludes with the big picture implications of cover crops for insect management.
